BeCoM (Better Contrail Mitigation) addresses the critical challenge of contrail-cirrus radiative forcing. The project integrates high-resolution meteorological data with Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models to improve the forecasting of atmospheric conditions conducive to persistent contrail formation.

A central pillar of the research involves the development of AI algorithms that fuse satellite-based observational data with physics-based models to enhance the detection and classification of warming versus cooling contrails.

By developing tools for optimizing flight trajectories with regards to both CO₂ and non-CO₂ impacts. BeCoM’s systemic approach moves beyond theoretical tools to provide actionable insight for policymakers, facilitating a transition toward climate-optimized flight profiles.

The scientific expertise for BeCoM is provided by a diverse group of partner institutions, such as TU Delft, CNRS, Thales, DLR, ECATS, and the German Weather Service (DWD), with Env-isa actively leading the work on research dissemination and communication, as well as supporting policymaker and stakeholder engagement.
